Former West Virginia and Miami Linebacker Tirek Austin-Cave Commits to New Mexico, Bolstering Lobos’ Defense
In a move aimed at fortifying their defensive unit, the New Mexico Lobos have secured a significant commitment from former West Virginia and Miami linebacker Tirek Austin-Cave. The 6-foot-1, 231-pound linebacker announced his decision via social media on Monday, expressing gratitude and excitement for the opportunity ahead.
“More Than Blessed 🙏🏾❤#Committed @UNMLoboFB @Coach__Hunter,” Austin-Cave posted on his Twitter account alongside an image of himself in Lobos gear.
Austin-Cave brings a wealth of experience to the Lobos, having spent his first three collegiate seasons with the Miami Hurricanes before transferring to West Virginia last year. With 15 career tackles under his belt, Austin-Cave arrives in Albuquerque with two years of eligibility remaining, offering both skill and potential for growth.
Primarily utilized as a middle linebacker during his tenure at West Virginia, Austin-Cave is expected to make an immediate impact in a linebacker room that New Mexico head coach Bronco Mendenhall has identified as needing depth.
“I think the linebackers (are) certainly a position of need, not only by number of players at that position, but experience … there’s also multiple packages in the defense,” Mendenhall commented earlier this spring to the Journal. “It’s a position that we need not only to address the terms of quality of play, but also the depth and numbers.”
With his versatility and understanding of different defensive schemes, Austin-Cave is poised to become a key contributor for the Lobos, helping solidify their defense and elevate their performance on the gridiron.
The addition of Tirek Austin-Cave underscores New Mexico’s commitment to bolstering their roster with talented players as they strive for success in the upcoming college football season. As anticipation builds for Austin-Cave’s debut in the Lobos’ uniform, fans eagerly await the impact he will undoubtedly make on the field.
