Remembering a Legend: Tribute to Ruben Douglas, UNM Basketball Icon
Ruben Douglas, a beloved University of New Mexico basketball legend and 2003 NCAA scoring champion, tragically passed away on April 12 in Costa Rica. The news of his untimely death has deeply saddened the basketball community and his legion of fans.
A native of Altadena, California, Douglas made an indelible mark on the basketball world during his three seasons with the New Mexico Lobos from 2000 to 2003. Known for his exceptional talent and infectious personality, Douglas endeared himself to teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
Douglas’s older brother, Ramon Douglas, fondly remembers him as both a jokester off the court and a gifted player on it. Ramon recalls Ruben’s unstoppable scoring ability and tireless work ethic, which propelled him to become one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA history.
Tragically, Douglas fell ill while in Costa Rica and succumbed to an unknown infection, leaving his family and loved ones reeling from the sudden loss. The Douglas family, still grappling with the shock of Ruben’s passing, has since flown to Costa Rica to collect his belongings and bring his body back to the United States.
Ruben Douglas’s impact extended far beyond the basketball court. He was a devoted father, son, brother, and friend, cherished by all who knew him. His legacy as a Lobo will forever be remembered, as he left an indelible mark on the program and was recently honored with his inclusion on the Mountain West’s 25th Season Team.
UNM Director of Athletics Eddie Nuñez expressed his condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ruben’s family, friends, and former teammates. He was a tremendous Lobo and will be missed.”
Ruben Douglas’s basketball journey did not end with his collegiate career. He went on to star in European basketball, leading Fortitudo Bologna to an Italian championship and earning EuroCup Finals MVP honors in 2006.
As the basketball world mourns the loss of a true legend, Ruben Douglas’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of excellence, perseverance, and unmatched passion for the game of basketball.
