Montana State Bobcats Dominate Big Sky Region Rodeo Championships
In a display of sheer dominance, the Montana State University (MSU) Bobcats rode to victory at the Big Sky Region men’s and women’s team championships held in Hamilton, Wyoming. With a remarkable performance, the Bobcats secured top honors in both categories, clinching their spots at the prestigious 2024 College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) set to take place in Casper, Wyoming, from June 9th to June 15th, 2024.
Under the guidance of head coach Kyle Whitaker, the Bobcats exhibited exceptional prowess, amassing a total of 880 points in the men’s competition and 385 points in the women’s division. Reflecting on the team’s stellar performance, Coach Whitaker expressed his satisfaction, emphasizing the team’s outstanding achievement in winning nine out of ten rodeos this spring.
The men’s team showcased their depth and skill across various events, securing victory in the steer wrestling event with Traver Johnson leading the charge. Additionally, the team demonstrated their proficiency in roping events, claiming top positions in tie-down roping and steer wrestling. Notably, Johnson’s outstanding performance earned him top honors in the all-around category, while Cole Gerhardt showcased his talent by finishing second in both bareback and steer wrestling.
On the women’s front, the Bobcats continued their winning streak with Cassidy Bolich emerging victorious in the breakaway roping event. Bolich’s success was complemented by strong performances in goat tying and barrel racing, with multiple team members contributing valuable points to the overall victory. Shantell Brewer’s impressive finishes in barrel racing and breakaway roping further solidified the Bobcats’ dominance in the women’s division.
As the Bobcats gear up for the CNFR in Casper, a total of twelve student-athletes from MSU will represent the university on the national stage. Among the men’s team, standouts including Monte Bailey, Wyatt Jensen, and Wes Shaw will compete in various events such as saddle bronc, tie-down roping, and bareback riding. Meanwhile, the women’s team will be led by talents like Meghan McGinley, Alexis McDonald, and Tayla Moeykens, showcasing their skills in events like breakaway roping, barrel racing, and goat tying.
With their exceptional performance at the Big Sky Region championships, the Montana State Bobcats have firmly established themselves as contenders for top honors at the upcoming CNFR. As they prepare to face off against the nation’s best rodeo athletes in Casper, the Bobcats carry with them the pride and determination of a team destined for greatness.
