Texas Longhorns Lose Recruit Battle to Oklahoma: Damonic Williams Chooses Sooners

In the ongoing battle for top recruits, the Texas Longhorns recently faced a setback in their pursuit of defensive line talent. According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, TCU transfer Damonic Williams has committed to Oklahoma, opting for the Sooners over the Longhorns, despite having just completed a visit to Texas.

Williams’ decision marks a missed opportunity for Texas, who have been vocal about their efforts to fortify their defensive line during this offseason. Following the spring game, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian openly acknowledged the need to address the depth and talent on the defensive front. “The depth on the defensive line is not where we need it to be,” Sarkisian emphasized. “Hopefully, we can address that. That’s a bit concerning… We don’t have enough bodies. There’s not enough big humans. It’s simple math.”

While Texas has made strides in bolstering their defensive line with transfers like Bill Norton and Tiaoalii Savea from Arizona, the addition of Williams would have been a significant boost. With 27 starts under his belt since the 2022 season, Williams brings valuable experience and production to the table, having tallied 60 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble. His contributions were instrumental in TCU’s journey to the CFP National Championship.

However, Texas is not without talent and potential on their defensive line. Despite losing key players like T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy to the draft, the Longhorns boast a formidable lineup including Barryn Sorrell, Ethan Burke, Alfred Collins, and Vernon Broughton, among others. Additionally, the team has added transfers Trey Moore from UTSA and Tiaoalii Savea from Arizona, as well as welcoming five-star freshman Colin Simmons.

As the Longhorns regroup and continue to shore up their defensive ranks, Williams’ decision to join Oklahoma serves as a reminder of the fierce competition for top recruits in college football, and the ongoing challenge of maintaining and enhancing a team’s talent pool.
