AFL Teams Pay Tribute to Former Player Cameron McCarthy
Teams across the AFL have come together to pay tribute to former player Cameron McCarthy following news of his passing. McCarthy, who spent two seasons with the Giants, was remembered fondly for his contributions to the game.
After advising the Giants of his desire to return home to Western Australia following the 2015 season, McCarthy’s trade request was denied, leading him to sit out the 2016 season as he returned home.
Despite the setback, McCarthy continued his AFL career with Fremantle after being traded during the 2016 trade period. During his time with the Dockers, he played 49 games and kicked 63 goals, showcasing his talent on the field.
However, McCarthy’s AFL journey took an unexpected turn in 2020 when he sensationally quit the Dockers mid-season after being informed that he would not be offered a contract for the following year. Fremantle football manager South Fremantle, described the departure as “mutually agreed,” allowing McCarthy to depart ahead of his scheduled axing.
Following his departure from the AFL, McCarthy returned to his WAFL club, South Fremantle, on a two-year deal in November 2020. However, his return to the field was short-lived as he did not return to training after recording just four touches in the season opener against West Perth.
McCarthy’s passing has left a somber mood across the AFL community as fans, teammates, and opponents alike remember his contributions to the sport. His journey serves as a reminder of the highs and lows of professional football and the impact it can have on individuals both on and off the field.
