Detroit Tigers Activate Gio Urshela from Injured List, Providing Stability and Defensive Strength
The Detroit Tigers welcomed back infielder Gio Urshela from the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s matchup against the Miami Marlins. Urshela, who had been sidelined for nearly a month due to a right hamstring strain suffered on April 19, returned to the starting lineup, slotting in at third base and batting sixth against left-hander Ryan Weathers.
The 32-year-old veteran expressed his excitement about returning to action, stating, “I’m happy. I’m excited to be back, finally.”
Urshela’s return prompted the Tigers to make roster moves, including the optioning of outfielder Akil Baddoo to Triple-A Toledo. Baddoo, who had a brief stint with the Tigers, played in just one game, registering one plate appearance and hitting a triple.
Manager A.J. Hinch emphasized Urshela’s importance to the team, praising his consistency at the plate and his stellar defensive abilities. “We know we’re going to get contact most of the time,” said Hinch. “We know that his defense is going to be very good at third base. He just has a calming presence.”
During his rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo, Urshela showcased his readiness for a return, batting an impressive .625 with one walk and one strikeout in nine plate appearances across three games. He also logged 13 innings at third base, demonstrating his defensive readiness.
Reflecting on his time in Toledo, Urshela commented, “I felt really good… My timing was there. I got my confidence within the game.”
Urshela’s injury occurred during a game against the Minnesota Twins when he felt tightness in his right hamstring while running out a ground ball. His return is a welcome sight for the Tigers, as they aim to bolster their lineup and solidify their defensive presence.
With Urshela back in the fold, the Tigers look to gain momentum and continue their pursuit of success in the 2024 season.
