Lando Norris Ready to Challenge Verstappen as Monaco GP Looms
Lando Norris, the rising star of McLaren, declared it was “about time” Max Verstappen experienced some nerves at the front of the Formula 1 grid. As the sport gears up for the iconic Monaco Grand Prix, Norris is buoyed by a series of strong performances that have seen him finish in the top two in the past three races, including a maiden victory in Miami.
Norris heads into F1’s most famous event with a renewed mindset, determined not to underestimate McLaren’s potential. Reflecting on his recent successes, the British driver expressed confidence in his ability to challenge the dominance of Verstappen and Red Bull.
Speaking to Sky Sports News in Monaco, Norris acknowledged the significance of putting pressure on Verstappen, who is used to leading comfortably. “It’s about time someone put him under pressure and he felt a bit of nerves again,” Norris remarked, referring to Verstappen’s late-race radio complaints about grip and lapped traffic during the recent Imola Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver’s recent form has been impressive, culminating in his Miami victory ahead of Verstappen and a near-triumph in Imola, where he finished within a second of the reigning world champion. Norris’s late charge in Imola demonstrated his growing confidence and skill, pushing Verstappen to the limit.
“I did everything I believed was right at the time,” Norris said, reflecting on the Imola race. “When it’s so close, you always think ‘what really could I have done that little bit differently,’ but you always could have done something a little bit better or a little bit differently. I’m sure Max could have reviewed things and said the same thing.”
Norris emphasized the importance of maintaining confidence without becoming overconfident. “I don’t want to be overconfident – that’s never been me – but we want to come into races now and be confident in racing against the Red Bull, racing against Ferrari, because we are in the mix with them,” he added.
The upcoming Monaco Grand Prix presents a crucial opportunity for Norris and McLaren. Known for its challenging circuit and prestige, a strong performance in Monaco could further tighten the title race and solidify Norris’s status as a serious contender.
Betting odds reflect the growing anticipation around Norris, placing him as a strong challenger to Verstappen, with Charles Leclerc also seen as a potential winner. The Monaco GP promises high stakes and intense competition, as Norris and McLaren aim to continue their upward trajectory.
Fans can watch the Monaco Grand Prix live on Sky Sports and stream it on NOW, with McLaren racing in a special Senna livery, adding to the event’s excitement. As the race weekend approaches, all eyes will be on Norris to see if he can maintain his momentum and keep the pressure on Verstappen at the front of the grid.
