David Brabham Honors Legendary Father with GT Victory on 10th Anniversary of Jack Brabham’s Death
On the 10th anniversary of Sir Jack Brabham’s passing, his legacy was celebrated in a remarkable fashion by his youngest son, David Brabham. The iconic Australian Formula 1 driver, known as ‘Black Jack’ for his on-track toughness, was honored as David secured a poignant victory at the Brands Hatch circuit.
Driving a Brabham BT62 sports car, David crossed the finish line on the Brabham Straight, named after his father, to win a GT race. This significant win occurred exactly a decade after Sir Jack’s death at the age of 88, making the moment even more special.
“You couldn’t have asked for a better celebration of Dad’s life,” David said. “The stars certainly aligned with that one.”
Sir Jack Brabham remains an iconic figure in motorsport history, being the only driver to win a Formula 1 World Championship in a car he built himself. He achieved this remarkable feat in 1966 with the Brabham BT19. Throughout his career, Jack won three world championships and founded the Brabham organization with Ron Tauranac in 1960.
Reflecting on his father’s achievements, David remarked, “No one else has achieved what Dad achieved, and no one will ever repeat it. The timing was perfect for someone like him to capture those moments, and he did.”
Jack Brabham’s illustrious career concluded with 14 wins, 13 pole positions, and 12 fastest laps from 123 grand prix starts. His legacy continues to inspire, with David now having full control of the Brabham name, ensuring that the family’s storied history in motorsport endures.
The victory at Brands Hatch serves as a fitting tribute to Sir Jack Brabham’s unparalleled contributions to racing, as his family continues to honor and uphold his legendary status in the world of motorsport.
