Winnipeg Standup out Stars Makes early return ahead Crucial Game

Winnipeg Blue Bombers Prep for Prairie Rivalry with Changes at Returner and Defensive Linemen

Following back-to-back victories, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are gearing up for a renewed prairie rivalry against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, amidst strategic changes aimed at enhancing team performance.

One notable adjustment involves the Blue Bombers’ special teams, particularly their return game, which has struggled this season. Chris Smith and Myron Mitchell, previously handling returner duties, have been moved to the practice roster. Kody Case, now on the active roster, steps in as the third different returner this season. The team aims to bolster its return game, currently ranking last in punt returns and second last in kickoff returns across the league.

“We’d like to see guys catch it and hit it and find those lanes and kinda go in there fearlessly,” commented special teams coordinator Mike Miller, emphasizing the importance of improving field position and momentum through effective returns.

Meanwhile, on the defensive front, the Blue Bombers are preparing for the return of TyJuan Garbutt from the six-game injured list. Garbutt, who sustained an ankle injury during training camp, has resumed practice and is poised to contribute significantly at defensive end. His potential return marks the fifth different starter opposite star defender Willie Jefferson this season.

Head coach Mike O’Shea expressed optimism about Garbutt’s imminent return, highlighting his athleticism and positive impact during preseason and recent practices. The move underscores Winnipeg’s ongoing efforts to optimize player rotations and strengthen defensive capabilities as they navigate the competitive CFL season.

As the Blue Bombers brace for their first of three matchups against the formidable Saskatchewan Roughriders, these strategic adjustments reflect their commitment to maintaining momentum and competitiveness in the West Division race.
