Haas Announces Kevin Magnussen’s Departure: Consistency Cited as Key Factor
Haas F1 Team principal Ayao Komatsu has revealed the key reason behind Kevin Magnussen’s departure from the team at the end of the 2024 season. The decision, described by Komatsu as “very difficult,” centers on the need for greater consistency alongside Nico Hulkenberg.
Komatsu highlighted Magnussen’s valuable contributions during his two stints with Haas, including standout performances such as a fifth-place finish in Bahrain and notable results in 2018. However, the team boss emphasized that a consistent reference point was necessary to complement the younger talent, Ollie Bearman, who will join the team next season.
“The difference between Kevin and Nico in terms of consistency is very small,” Komatsu explained. “But we need a driver who can consistently match or approach Nico’s level. The decision was tough, but it’s part of my responsibility to make choices in the best interests of the team.”
Esteban Ocon is widely expected to take Magnussen’s seat, with an official announcement anticipated before the summer break. Komatsu stressed that the decision was made with no personal sentiment, focusing solely on what is best for Haas’s future development.
“Whether I like it or not, that’s part of my job,” Komatsu said. “I needed to make a professional decision, putting the team’s potential and results first.”
As Haas prepares for a new chapter, Magnussen’s departure marks the end of his seventh season with the team, having competed in 147 Grand Prix over his career.
