Breaking: Gabbie Marshall Starts Lobbying To Drafted To Iowa For 2025

New Era for Iowa Hawkeyes Women’s Basketball Under Coach Jan Jensen

Coaches often leave a profound impact on their players, fostering relationships that extend beyond the court. The University of Iowa has long been a place where such connections thrive, and the recent leadership changes in the Hawkeyes women’s basketball program underscore this tradition. Following Lisa Bluder’s retirement, Jan Jensen has taken over as head coach, bringing a fresh yet familiar approach to the team. Among her recruits is assistant coach Raina Harmon, who has already earned admiration from players like Gabbie Marshall and Kate Martin.

Gabbie Marshall recently praised Harmon in a heartfelt tweet, sharing an article by Chad Leistikow and expressing her gratitude: “The most genuine person with the most infectious personality. You are truly one of a kind and I’m so blessed to have you in my life forever.” Marshall’s sentiment was echoed by Kate Martin, now a rookie with the Las Vegas Aces, who told Leistikow, “When I think of the kind of coach I want to be or the impact I want to have one day, I definitely think of her.”

Jan Jensen, who served as an assistant coach under Bluder for 24 years, has seamlessly transitioned into her new role. Jensen’s deep connection to the program is evident. “Nobody loves this place like I do,” she stated, reflecting on her long tenure at Iowa. Athletic Director Beth Goetz praised Jensen, saying, “Jan models daily what it means to have a tireless work ethic, to lead with compassion and fiery passion, and to be confident in who you are.”

Kate Martin, currently navigating her first season in the WNBA and participating in the WBCA’s program, aspires to follow in her coaches’ footsteps and become a coach herself. Meanwhile, Gabbie Marshall, despite being left off the 2024 WNBA draft, continues to find ways to stay connected to the sport.

As the Hawkeyes look to the future, significant changes have already taken place. Caitlin Clark’s legacy will continue to echo through the Carver-Hawkeye Arena, and while Kate Martin has found a new home with the WNBA champions, Gabbie Marshall is forging her own path.

Under Jensen’s recruitment, the Hawkeyes have welcomed two new assistant coaches, Randi Henderson and Sean Sullivan, the latter also serving as the team’s general manager. As Iowa transitions into this new era, the next generation of Hawkeyes is ready to leave its mark, continuing the tradition of strong, impactful coaching relationships.
