White played a crucial role in Team USA’s win over South Sudan, contributing 10 points off the bench in 17 minutes. Impressively, he made all three of his attempts from beyond the arc and added three steals and a block. White’s performance highlights his seamless transition from winning an NBA championship with the Celtics in June to now excelling on the international stage.
The guard’s inclusion on the roster came under sudden and unexpected circumstances. White was called to replace LA Clippers star Kawhi Leonard, who was initially set to participate. In an interview with Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe, White reflected on the abrupt change in his offseason plans.
“I just had to change plans really quickly,” White said. “I was super excited. Once I got that call, I changed my focus. It’s really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Leonard’s removal sparked controversy, with conflicting statements from USA Basketball and the Clippers. USA Basketball’s announcement described the decision as mutual, stating that both they and the Clippers agreed it was in Leonard’s best interest to prepare for the upcoming NBA season. However, Clippers President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank countered this narrative, asserting that the decision was solely made by USA Basketball and that Leonard and the Clippers were eager for him to compete in Paris.
Despite the controversy, White has thrived in his role, firmly establishing himself in Kerr’s rotation. His strong play has been instrumental for Team USA, which continues to navigate the group phase with high aspirations.
