Kevin Durant made history in the breathtaking city of Paris. He became the first US men’s basketball player to have four Olympic gold medals. Unsurprisingly, his basketball arsenal captivated the audience as he played a frontal role in the USA’s victory. However, he wasn’t just there to break records. He might have been there to analyze some investment opportunities and explore the sports diversity of Paris. According to Santi Aouna, the Slim Reaper will become a minority owner at Paris Saint-German, the former club of Lionel Messi. Just two days ago, he visited the Campus PSG, a new training establishment of the soccer giants who play in France’s Ligue 1. Not only did he term it the “best” training facility in the world, but he
“Yeah, just the history. The love for sport. The love for art in general The people make it what it is. I get so much love every time I come here. I appreciate the sport and you know just a beautiful city to be in overall man,” he said during his visit.
While at the facility, Durant met with the players, visited the training grounds, and also had a conversation with the president of the club Nasser Al-Khelaifi. The Slim Reaper has had ties with PSG long before his visit a few days ago. In 2015, during his European tour, Durant first visited the home stadium of PSG, the Parc des Princes and even posed with their home jersey.
This isn’t the first of Kevin Durant’s investments in soccer. In 2020, the two-time NBA champion purchased a 5% stake in MLS’ Philadelphia Union and still remains a member of the board. Apart from him, even his former teammate James Harden is an investor in the MLS, having a stake in the Houston Dynamos.
Paris Saint-Germain was an opportunity Kevin Durant capitalized on. But it wasn’t the first sports team that he wanted to invest in. In 2022, Dan Snyder, the ex-owner of the NFL’s Washington Commanders was looking to sell the franchise. As a native of the city, Durant has been a loyal fan of the franchise for the longest time.
When speaking with ESPN, while speaking of his admiration of the Commanders also revealed his desire to be a part owner if the opportunity arises.
“In a perfect world, I would be a part of it. I would love to do it. I would love to give a little bit of my money to be a part of the Commanders, but we’ll see. Hopefully, it’s somebody nice. I heard [Amazon CEO Jeff] Bezos and Jay-Z, but you never know,” he said.
Eventually, there was NBA representation, but not that of KD. Magic Johnson partnered with Mitchell Rales, Josh Harris, and his business partner David Blitzer to complete the purchase of the Commanders for a record $6 billion. Kevin Durant still remains a fan of the NFL franchise, but since his dream opportunity passed, PSG might be the perfect rebound with a tremendous upside.
