Breaking News: VCU Parts Ways with Head Coach Ryan Odom
In a surprising move, Virginia Commonwealth University has officially announced the dismissal of head coach Ryan Odom after just two seasons. The decision comes after a disappointing start to the 2024-25 campaign, with the Rams failing to meet expectations both in non-conference play and early Atlantic 10 matchups.
Sources close to the program indicate that the decision was driven by a combination of underperformance, team chemistry issues, and a lack of development from key recruits. Despite Odom’s success at UMBC, including a historic upset in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, his tenure at VCU has not produced the desired results. Last season’s early exit in the NIT and inconsistent play throughout this season have put pressure on the administration to make a change.
Athletic Director Ed McLaughlin expressed the university’s commitment to returning to its winning culture and stated that the search for a new head coach will begin immediately. “We thank Coach Odom for his dedication and effort, but ultimately, the program’s direction requires a fresh start,” McLaughlin noted in a statement.
The Rams are expected to name an interim head coach within the week as they regroup and try to salvage their season.
