Colorado Man Found Dead in Grand Canyon; Marks 15th Fatality of 2024
Grand Canyon National Park, AZ – The National Park Service has confirmed that a 59-year-old man from Salida, Colorado, was found dead over the weekend at Poncho’s Kitchen, a camping area along the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. His death marks the 15th fatality of the year within the park and the seventh in just over a month, highlighting an alarming trend that has captured national attention.
The man, identified as Patrick Horton, was on the 10th day of a “non-commercial river trip” when his body was discovered at approximately 7:30 a.m. on September 7, according to a press release from the National Park Service. Horton was reportedly taking part in a trip along the Colorado River when the tragic incident occurred.
The exact cause of his death has not been determined. “The National Park Service is conducting an investigation in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office. No additional information is available at this time,” the release stated.
Horton’s death is the latest in a deadly series of incidents in the Grand Canyon over the past several weeks. Since late July, the park has seen a rise in fatalities, including a BASE jumping accident in early August, a heat-related hiking death, and a fatal flash flood. The increased number of deaths has raised concerns about visitor safety.
Park officials are urging visitors to take extreme caution as they engage in activities such as swimming, kayaking, hiking, and camping. With unpredictable weather conditions, treacherous terrain, and high temperatures, the risk factors are elevated. Officials have emphasized the importance of proper preparation, including carrying enough water, understanding weather forecasts, and knowing the physical demands of the terrain.
As the busy tourism season continues, the National Park Service advises all visitors to be vigilant, prepared, and aware of their surroundings to prevent further tragedies.
