Elfyn Evans Struggles with FIA Hybrid Rule Malfunction at 2024 WRC Round
Welsh rally star Elfyn Evans faced a frustrating setback during the 2024 World Rally Championship (WRC) as he battled technical issues caused by the FIA’s Hybrid Power Unit regulations. Competing in the Rally of Greece, Evans’ Toyota Yaris Rally1 car experienced a hybrid system malfunction that cost him crucial time on the stages, impacting his championship aspirations.
Under the FIA’s regulations introduced in 2022, all Rally1 cars must use a hybrid power unit, combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor for enhanced performance. However, in a pivotal stage during the rally, Evans’ Yaris failed to activate the hybrid boost, leaving him to complete the stage without the extra power advantage.
Evans, who was running in the top three, immediately felt the impact. “It’s frustrating,” Evans commented. “We rely heavily on the hybrid boost, especially in the fast sections. Without it, the car just couldn’t keep pace.”
The malfunction, which was traced back to an issue in the complex hybrid system, left Evans with reduced power output for several key stages. FIA rules state that any failure in the hybrid system cannot be repaired mid-stage, forcing Evans to continue under the reduced conditions for the remainder of the day.
The hybrid regulations, part of the FIA’s push for sustainability in motorsport, have posed challenges for teams adjusting to the new technology. While the rule aims to improve performance and reduce emissions, it has also introduced reliability issues that can make or break a rally for drivers like Evans.
Despite the setback, Evans remains optimistic about his title campaign, though the malfunction has certainly put a dent in his championship hopes.
