Barcelona Shift Focus from Haaland to Newcastle’s Alexander Isak
Barcelona, September 2024 – In a surprising turn of events, Barcelona have reportedly shifted their transfer focus away from Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and are now eyeing Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak as a potential long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Haaland, who has been in sensational form for Manchester City this season with nine goals in their first four Premier League matches, has been linked with a contract extension at the club. However, ongoing negotiations have hit a snag, with the Norwegian striker’s entourage pushing for a release clause set at around €120 million, giving him greater control over his future. With Real Madrid among the clubs capable of paying such a fee, Haaland’s future at City remains uncertain.
Amid these developments, Barcelona are reportedly cooling their interest in Haaland. The club’s head coach, Hansi Flick, is said to have “chosen” Isak as a more affordable and tactically versatile option. The Swedish international scored 25 goals in 40 matches last season and has impressed both domestically and in European competition.
Lewandowski’s contract at Barcelona includes a clause that would trigger a one-year extension if he plays 45 minutes or more in at least 55% of the club’s matches this season. However, the 35-year-old’s long-term future remains in doubt, prompting the Catalan giants to look for a successor.
Isak, 24, fits Flick’s vision for a forward who can offer both experience and youth. His ability to play both as a central striker and in wide positions is seen as a key asset, providing tactical flexibility for Barcelona. Club president Joan Laporta is also reportedly supportive of the move, viewing Isak as a more financially viable alternative to Haaland.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United have had a turbulent period off the pitch, with manager Eddie Howe reportedly clashing with new sporting director Paul Mitchell over the club’s transfer dealings. Despite these tensions, Howe continues to have the backing of the club’s senior executives, who are confident in his leadership despite the recent struggles.
As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona will push forward with their interest in Isak or if they will rekindle their pursuit of Haaland in the future.
