Swimming Tragedy: A Diver Broke Spine And Died While Jumping From Height To A Pool

Two Swimmers Die After Diving Accident at Oakridge Aquatic Center

Two experienced swimmers died following a tragic diving accident at the Oakridge Aquatic Center in Springfield, on Saturday, September 21. The victims, Matthew Thompson, 44, and Daniel Greene, 36, reportedly dove into the deep end of the pool during a recreational swim but did not resurface.

Lifeguards and emergency services were immediately called to the scene. Despite their efforts, both men were pulled from the water unresponsive, and paramedics pronounced them dead shortly after. Investigators are looking into the cause of the accident, though initial reports suggest a possible issue with underwater visibility or disorientation.

Both Thompson and Greene were regulars at the Aquatic Center, well-regarded in the local swimming community for their years of experience in diving and underwater training. Their sudden deaths have left the community in shock.

“We’re devastated by this loss,” said Laura Mathews, a friend of the pair. “Matt and Daniel were passionate about swimming, and they loved the water. It’s hard to believe they’re gone.”

The Oakridge Aquatic Center has been temporarily closed pending the investigation, and grief counseling services are being offered to staff and patrons.
