Justin Verlander and Two Astros Players Likely to Miss Postseason Roster
As the Houston Astros prepare for yet another MLB postseason run after clinching the AL West, difficult roster decisions loom. With only 26 spots available for the playoff roster, some surprising names may be left off. Despite Houston’s strong finish, a few players—including one high-profile pitcher—are expected to miss out.
In what is perhaps the most shocking development, it appears veteran pitcher Justin Verlander will not make the Astros’ postseason roster. After returning from injury too quickly, Verlander has struggled on the mound, posting an ERA close to 9.00. While his leadership and playoff experience are unquestionable, Verlander’s inability to generate enough swings and misses has left Houston in a tough position. Given the strength of their rotation—led by Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown, and Yusei Kikuchi—the Astros have decided that Verlander is not in the best form to contribute to their postseason success.
“Justin’s always been a competitor, but unfortunately, this season just hasn’t gone the way he’d hoped after returning from injury,” a team source said. “The reality is, with only three games in the AL Wild Card round, we don’t have room for anyone not performing at their best.”
Another player unlikely to make the cut is César Salazar, a left-handed hitting catcher who has shown promise in September. However, with Victor Caratini and Yainer Diaz already providing depth behind the plate and slugger Yordan Álvarez dealing with injury issues, Salazar’s opportunities will be limited. The Astros are expected to carry only two catchers into the playoffs, leaving Salazar as the odd man out.
Lastly, while rookie pitcher Spencer Arrighetti has enjoyed a standout season, he too is likely to miss out on postseason action. Despite his strong performances, the Astros’ rotation and bullpen are set with Valdez, Brown, and Kikuchi, alongside Ronel Blanco as a potential fourth starter. Arrighetti’s impressive debut year is not enough to secure him a spot for Houston’s playoff push.
While fans may be surprised by some of these decisions, the Astros are focused on putting forward their most competitive roster as they aim for another deep run in October.
