Karch Kiraly to Lead U.S. Men’s Volleyball Team Through 2028 Los Angeles Olympics with New Vision
In a significant shift for USA Volleyball, Karch Kiraly, the iconic figure behind the women’s national team’s recent success, will take over as head coach of the U.S. men’s volleyball team, the organization announced Thursday. Kiraly, widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest players, aims to usher in a new era as the team gears up for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Kiraly brings a wealth of experience to the role, having guided the U.S. women’s team to gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, their first in history. As a player, he won two Olympic gold medals in men’s indoor volleyball and a third in beach volleyball. Now, he returns to his roots, replacing John Speraw, who led the men’s squad to bronze at both the 2016 Rio and 2024 Paris Games.
Speraw, recently appointed as USA Volleyball’s president and CEO on October 1, praised Kiraly’s appointment. “Karch is a master strategist and leader,” Speraw said. “He understands what it takes to win on the biggest stage.”
Kiraly’s Transformation Plan
Kiraly outlined a bold transformation plan that emphasizes developing young talent, enhancing mental toughness, and prioritizing aggressive, fast-paced play. “We have immense potential within our pipeline, and the goal is to refine that talent for peak performance in 2028,” Kiraly said.
He also stressed the importance of fostering a winning culture within the team. “I’m committed to building a unified, resilient group that thrives under pressure. It’s not just about physical skills—mentality is everything,” he added.
Kiraly’s plan includes a focus on integrating advanced data analytics to optimize player performance and game strategies. Additionally, he aims to strengthen the connection between the national team and the domestic volleyball system, giving young players more opportunities to develop in high-pressure environments.
Building Toward Los Angeles 2028
The transition is timely, as USA Volleyball looks to capitalize on the excitement surrounding the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. “Competing at home adds a new layer of responsibility, but also a unique opportunity to inspire future generations,” Kiraly said. “We want to give the fans a team they can be proud of.”
Kiraly’s tenure will officially begin in early 2025, with a focus on building continuity and chemistry within the squad ahead of the 2028 Games. Key players from the 2024 Paris team, alongside emerging talent, are expected to play pivotal roles in the next Olympic cycle.
As Kiraly embarks on this new challenge, the volleyball community awaits the results of his visionary leadership. With his proven track record, deep understanding of the sport, and relentless drive, hopes are high that he can guide the U.S. men’s team to gold on home soil in 2028.
