BOMBSHELL: TRADE WAR WON: Yankees Outbid Rivals to Land $161 Million Slugger Cody Bellinger

Yankees Eye Cody Bellinger as Potential First Base Solution via Trade

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees may be looking to solve their long-standing issues at first base by acquiring Chicago Cubs star Cody Bellinger. According to YES Network insider Jack Curry, the Bronx Bombers have expressed interest in the 29-year-old, who brings a blend of power, versatility, and defensive prowess that could address several of the Yankees’ needs.

Bellinger, currently signed for $26.7 million in 2025 with a player option for 2026, has reportedly been made available by the Cubs. The Yankees, who have been linked to Bellinger in the past, appear ready to pursue the former NL MVP to bolster their lineup.

“The Yankees have long had an interest in Bellinger,” Curry revealed on Yankees Hot Stove. “Thumbs down on [Nolan] Arenado, as I do not see him as a player they have interest in. But thumbs up on Bellinger, as they’ve had interest in him for a while.”

Addressing a Critical Need

The Yankees’ production at first base last season was among the worst in Major League Baseball. Collectively, Anthony Rizzo, DJ LeMahieu, Ben Rice, and Oswaldo Cabrera combined for a .619 OPS and 76 wRC+, both of which ranked in the bottom two across the league.

By comparison, Bellinger’s .266/.325/.426 slash line and 109 wRC+ last year would represent a significant upgrade. His 18 home runs and 2.2 fWAR further highlight his value, even in what some considered a down year.

Bellinger’s left-handed power swing could thrive at Yankee Stadium, where the Short Porch in right field has long been a haven for sluggers. His versatility is also a major draw—Bellinger has consistently delivered elite defense in the outfield (29 career Outs Above Average) and remains reliable at first base, where he recorded one Out Above Average last season.

A Proven Talent with Upside

Bellinger’s career has seen both meteoric highs and challenging lows. After winning NL Rookie of the Year in 2017 and NL MVP in 2019 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he endured a sharp downturn from 2020 to 2022. However, a resurgence with the Cubs in 2023 (.307/.356/.525, 26 HR, 136 wRC+) showcased his ability to return to elite form.

While his 2024 numbers didn’t match his breakout with the Cubs, they remained closer to his peak than his earlier struggles, suggesting he still has the potential to make a significant impact.

Room for a Blockbuster

Curry noted that acquiring Bellinger would not preclude the Yankees from making additional big moves, even if it meant exceeding the highest luxury tax threshold. Reports indicate that the Yankees remain focused on retaining Juan Soto, whose addition would significantly increase their payroll, but they could still have the flexibility to absorb Bellinger’s contract.

For the Yankees, adding Bellinger would address one of their most glaring weaknesses while bolstering their lineup with a player capable of handling multiple positions. With the Cubs reportedly willing to discuss trades, the stage could be set for a blockbuster move in the Bronx.
