HOT DEAL: Yankees Make a Move On Acquisition Of Cody Bellinger

The New York Yankees have been active this offseason, making significant moves to bolster their roster for the upcoming 2025 season.

Acquisition of Cody Bellinger

On December 18, 2024, the Yankees acquired outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet. The Yankees will absorb the majority of Bellinger’s $27.5 million salary, with the Cubs contributing $5 million. Bellinger, a former National League MVP, has two years remaining on his contract, including a player option for the 2026 season. This move aims to fill the gap left by Juan Soto’s departure to the New York Mets and adds a powerful left-handed bat to the Yankees’ lineup. Notably, Bellinger’s father, Clay, previously played for the Yankees, making them the fourth father-son duo to wear the team’s uniform.

Trade for Closer Devin Williams

The Yankees have also strengthened their bullpen by acquiring All-Star closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers. Williams, known for his devastating changeup, aims to follow in the footsteps of legendary Yankees closers like Mariano Rivera. In exchange, the Yankees traded pitcher Nestor Cortes and minor league infielder Caleb Durbin to the Brewers. Williams expressed optimism about joining the Yankees and is open to a contract extension if terms are mutually beneficial.

Nestor Cortes’ Farewell

Following his trade to the Brewers, pitcher Nestor Cortes penned an emotional farewell to Yankees fans. Cortes, who had a breakout season in 2022 and became a fan favorite, expressed gratitude for his time in New York and the support he received from the fan base.

Offseason Spending Spree

After missing out on signing Juan Soto, who secured a record-breaking contract with the New York Mets, the Yankees have been aggressive in the offseason market. In addition to acquiring Bellinger and Williams, they signed pitcher Max Fried to a $218 million deal and are reportedly eyeing free agent Alex Bregman. These moves reflect the organization’s commitment to building a competitive roster and addressing key areas to enhance their chances in the upcoming season.

As the offseason progresses, the Yankees continue to make strategic decisions to strengthen their lineup and pitching staff, aiming for a successful

2025 campaign.
