Urban Meyer Changes Tune, Predicts Ohio State to Win National Championship
Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer has shifted his preseason prediction after witnessing the Buckeyes dominate their first two College Football Playoff (CFP) opponents. Initially favoring Oregon to win the national championship, Meyer now believes Ohio State is the team to beat after back-to-back commanding victories over Tennessee and Oregon.
Buckeyes’ Dominance in the CFP
Ohio State made a statement with a 41-17 victory over Tennessee in the first round of the CFP, followed by an emphatic 41-21 win over Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Meyer, speaking on “The Triple Option” podcast, expressed confidence in the Buckeyes’ ability to claim the title if they maintain their current form.
“If Team A shows up … this will be a wrap,” Meyer said. “Ohio State will lift the gold trophy. If the best roster in the country plays like the best roster in the country, they’ll be national champs in a few weeks, and we’re witnessing it.”
Meyer noted Ohio State’s overwhelming talent, especially at the skill positions, as a key factor in their dominance. “Every skill player on Ohio State, I think, will be playing substantially in the National Football League. That’s how good they are,” he added.
Path to the Title
The Buckeyes now face Texas in the CFP semifinals, with the winner advancing to play either Penn State or Notre Dame, who will square off in the Orange Bowl. Meyer believes Ohio State has the edge, but consistency will be crucial.
Offensive Firepower
Quarterback Will Howard has been a revelation for the Buckeyes, throwing for 630 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception on 41-of-55 passing through the first two CFP games. True freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has emerged as Howard’s top target, catching 13 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns during the playoff run.
“Howard and Smith have been unstoppable,” Meyer said. “Jeremiah Smith is the most explosive player on the field, and he’s just a freshman. That’s a scary thought for everyone else.”
Big Ten’s Resurgence
Meyer also commented on the Big Ten’s postseason success, declaring the era of SEC dominance over.
“Ohio State is proving that the Big Ten is here to stay,” Meyer said. “Their performance this postseason has been a statement to the rest of college football.”
Buckeyes’ Confidence High
With their eyes set on the national championship, the Buckeyes appear poised to secure their place atop college football. If they can maintain their current level of play, Meyer’s latest prediction might just come true.
