South Carolina Part Ways with Linebacker Commit Rodney Colton
In a surprising turn of events, four-star linebacker Rodney Colton has decommitted from the University of South Carolina. The Newnan, Georgia native, who had pledged his commitment to the Gamecocks in April 2024, announced his decision to part ways with the program.
Colton, ranked as the No. 127 overall prospect and No. 9 linebacker in the 2026 recruiting class, had been a highly regarded member of South Carolina’s upcoming recruiting class. During his junior year at Newnan High School, Colton showcased his skills with 51 total tackles, six sacks, and an interception, helping his team to a 9-3 record.
South Carolina’s 2026 class, which now includes five commitments, remains strong, with three blue-chip recruits. Despite the loss of Colton, the Gamecocks currently hold the No. 11 spot in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
Colton’s decommitment opens the door for other programs to enter the race for the talented linebacker, leaving the door open for new recruitment opportunities. South Carolina will now look to strengthen their 2026 class in the coming months as they adjust to the change.
