San Diego Padres Ownership Faces Legal Turmoil Amid Succession Dispute

San Diego, CA (January 29, 2025) – The San Diego Padres are embroiled in a significant legal dispute following the death of former owner Peter Seidler in November 2023. His widow, Sheel Seidler, has initiated legal action against her brothers-in-law, Matthew and Robert Seidler, challenging the succession plan for control of the team.

In a lawsuit filed in Travis County Probate Court in Austin, Texas, Sheel Seidler alleges breaches of fiduciary duty, fraud, and self-dealing by her brothers-in-law. She contends that Peter Seidler intended for her and their children to succeed him as the Padres’ control person. The dispute centers on the appointment of John Seidler, Peter’s eldest brother, as the new control person, a decision that has yet to receive approval from Major League Baseball (MLB).

The lawsuit also highlights allegations of discriminatory behavior, with Sheel claiming that Robert’s wife, Alecia Seidler, directed racist and profane remarks toward her. Sheel seeks to remove Matthew as trustee and prevent the appointment of anyone other than herself as the Padres’ control person.

In response, the Peter Seidler Trust asserts that Peter had a clear estate plan, naming three of his nine siblings as successor trustees and explicitly prohibiting Sheel from serving in that capacity. The trust maintains that John Seidler is the designated control person, aligning with Peter’s vision for the team.

This legal battle has cast uncertainty over the Padres’ leadership and future direction. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the resolution of this dispute is crucial for maintaining organizational stability and upholding the legacy of Peter Seidler.
