South Carolina Gamecocks Honor A’ja Wilson with Jersey Retirement Ceremony
COLUMBIA, S.C. — In an emotional and historic ceremony on February 2, 2025, the South Carolina Gamecocks immortalized one of their greatest athletes by retiring A’ja Wilson’s No. 22 jersey. The celebration took place at Colonial Life Arena, where fans, former teammates, and university officials gathered to honor the legacy of the Gamecocks’ basketball icon.
A’ja Wilson, who led South Carolina to its first-ever NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship in 2017, has since become a global basketball superstar. She’s a three-time WNBA MVP, an Olympic gold medalist, and a cornerstone of the Las Vegas Aces’ dynasty. Her contributions to the Gamecocks program are immeasurable, both on and off the court.
“I wouldn’t be the person I am today without South Carolina,” Wilson said, holding back tears during her speech. “Coach Dawn Staley believed in me when I was just a kid from Hopkins, South Carolina. This jersey isn’t just mine—it belongs to my family, my teammates, my coaches, and every fan who’s supported me.”
Head Coach Dawn Staley, who recruited Wilson as the nation’s top high school prospect, praised her former star. “A’ja changed the trajectory of this program. She brought us our first national title, but more importantly, she showed what it means to lead with grace, humility, and determination,” Staley said.
Wilson’s jersey now hangs proudly in the rafters, serving as an enduring symbol of excellence and inspiration for future Gamecocks.
