Mathew Barzal Vows to Retire as a New York Islander: ‘This Is Where I Belong’
February 6, 2025 – Elmont, NY
Mathew Barzal has cemented his status as the face of the New York Islanders, but now he’s making an even bigger commitment: a lifetime one. The 27-year-old forward, who has spent his entire NHL career with the Islanders, declared in a heartfelt interview that he has no intention of ever wearing another jersey.
“This is home,” Barzal said after a recent practice at UBS Arena. “From the moment I was drafted here, I knew this was a special place. The fans, the organization, my teammates—it’s all family to me. I want to finish my career as a New York Islander.”
Barzal, who signed an eight-year contract extension in 2022, has been the Islanders’ offensive cornerstone, consistently leading the team in points and providing electrifying moments on the ice. His loyalty to the franchise has only grown stronger over the years, especially after witnessing the passionate fanbase rally behind the team through highs and lows.
“The support we get here is unreal. I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else,” Barzal added. “I’ve had conversations with guys around the league, and I always tell them, ‘There’s nothing like playing for the Islanders.’”
With his current contract keeping him in New York through at least 2031, Barzal’s vision of retiring as an Islander is more than just talk. Team executives have also expressed their desire to keep him in blue and orange for life.
“He’s the heart and soul of this team,” said Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello. “Mathew embodies what it means to be an Islander—hardworking, dedicated, and committed to success. We’d love for him to be here for as long as he wants.”
Although Barzal is currently sidelined with a lower-body injury, he remains focused on helping the team push for the playoffs once he returns. And as for the future?
“I want to win a Stanley Cup here,” he said. “That’s the ultimate goal. If I can do that and retire as an Islander, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
