Alex Wilson, a Swiss sprinter and 2018 European Championship bronze medalist in the 200 meters, faced a significant setback in his athletic career due to a doping violation. In March 2021, Wilson tested positive for the anabolic steroid trenbolone during an out-of-competition test. He attributed the positive result to consuming contaminated beef at a Jamaican restaurant in the United States.

Initially, Wilson’s provisional suspension was lifted by the Swiss Olympic disciplinary chamber in July 2021, allowing him to continue competing. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and World Athletics appealed this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Just before the Tokyo Olympics, CAS reinstated Wilson’s suspension, preventing him from participating in the Games.

In June 2022, the Swiss Olympic tribunal concluded that Wilson had intentionally used the banned substance and imposed a four-year ban, effective until April 2025. Wilson was also ordered to pay fines and court costs totaling CHF13,750. He retains the right to appeal this decision to CAS.
