Brenda Blethyn and Ann Cleeves Celebrate ‘Vera’ Legacy at Newcastle City Hall Event
On March 13, 2025, actress Brenda Blethyn and author Ann Cleeves attended a special event titled “Vera: End of an Era” at Newcastle City Hall. The evening featured discussions about their experiences working on the acclaimed ITV drama series “Vera,” which concluded earlier this year after 14 successful seasons. Hosted by TV presenter Steph McGovern, the event offered fans insights into the show’s impact on the North East and its global audience.
Reflecting on her time portraying DCI Vera Stanhope, Blethyn expressed her appreciation for the region and its people, noting the warm reception she always received. She humorously mentioned the “magic of filming,” where Vera might enter a door in Newcastle and exit in Berwick.
The series not only showcased the scenic landscapes of Northumberland but also contributed to local tourism, with fans visiting various filming locations. Both Blethyn and Cleeves were honored with Outstanding Contribution awards at the Royal Television Society’s North East and the Border Awards in February 2025, underscoring their significant impact on regional television.
While “Vera” has concluded, Blethyn has hinted at the possibility of returning for special episodes, stating, “A special would be nice. It’s definitely one of my favourite roles I’ve done. I love the character.”
Fans can relive the entire series and watch the special documentary “Vera, Farewell Pet”
