WVU Women’s Basketball 2024-25 Season Among Program’s Best
The West Virginia University (WVU) women’s basketball team capped off an impressive 2024-25 season, solidifying its place among the best campaigns in program history. Under second-year head coach Mark Kellogg, the Mountaineers demonstrated resilience and skill, making their mark in both the Big 12 and the NCAA Tournament.
Season Highlights
WVU delivered several statement victories, including a dominant 89-53 win over Texas Tech on January 8 and a 73-46 triumph over Colorado on January 15. These performances helped the Mountaineers maintain a strong regular-season record and earn national recognition, entering the NCAA Tournament with momentum.
The Mountaineers advanced to the second round of March Madness after defeating Columbia 78-59 in their opening game on March 22. However, their tournament journey ended with a 58-47 loss to North Carolina on March 24, despite a strong defensive effort that kept the game competitive.
Standout Players
Ja’Naiya “JJ” Quinerly emerged as the team’s star, averaging 19.8 points per game and earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. Her stellar play has positioned her as a top prospect for the 2025 WNBA Draft.
Historical Significance
The 2024-25 season stands out in WVU history for multiple reasons. The team was ranked No. 16 in the preseason AP Top 25, reflecting its growing national presence. Additionally, the Mountaineers’ defensive prowess and strong leadership under Kellogg set a solid foundation for the future.
While their NCAA Tournament run fell short of the Sweet 16, WVU’s performance this season signals a promising future for the program, with hopes of building on this success in the years to come.
