‘On The Court Respect’ Wouldn’t Give me The Win I Desire But Respect Will- Dawn Staley Issues Stern To Jamessia Ford Ahead Of Sunday Clash

Dawn Staley Issues Stern Warning to South Carolina Players

South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley has sent a strong message to her players, emphasizing discipline and respect both on and off the court. Staley, known for her no-nonsense approach, has made it clear that she expects her team to uphold high standards of sportsmanship and focus.

Following key victories over North Carolina and Duke in December 2023, Staley reprimanded her players for unsportsmanlike behavior, including excessive trash-talking and taunting. She addressed the issue head-on, stating, “We’ll respect the game and how to play it. Hopefully that’s just a lesson learned… I’m good without all the kisses and all of that crap. That’s not a part of who we are.”

As the team prepared for their final game before the holiday break, Staley took a tough stance to ensure her players remained focused. “You threaten them. I mean, I did,” she admitted. “You have to be where your mind is, and if your mind is at home, your play is going to say so.”

In January 2025, Staley provided a blunt assessment of her players’ readiness for the professional level, delivering a wake-up call about the challenges of the WNBA. “I don’t think we have anybody on our team that can go into the WNBA and start,” she stated. She stressed the importance of embracing roles, improving discipline, and putting in the necessary work to succeed beyond the collegiate level.

Staley’s candid approach underscores her commitment to shaping her players for success, not only in college basketball but in their future careers. With South Carolina continuing to be a dominant force in women’s basketball, her leadership remains a defining factor in the program’s sustained excellence.
