Marley Washenitz Commits to WVU for Final Season
March 30, 2025 — West Virginia University (WVU) has secured a major addition to its women’s basketball roster, as former in-state standout Marley Washenitz has officially committed to the Mountaineers for her final season of eligibility.
Washenitz, a Fairmont, West Virginia native and former Fairmont Senior High School star, entered the transfer portal after spending the past season at the University of Pittsburgh. During her time with the Panthers, she averaged 9.3 points, 2.7 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game, proving herself as a key contributor.
After receiving interest from multiple programs, Washenitz ultimately chose to return home, citing her deep-rooted connection to WVU and the opportunity to compete at a high level in the Big 12 Conference.
“I’ve always had pride in being from West Virginia, and playing for WVU has been a dream of mine since I was a kid,” Washenitz said. “I’m beyond excited to join the Mountaineers and give everything I have to this team and the fans.”
Head coach Dawn Plitzuweit expressed enthusiasm about the addition, noting that Washenitz’s leadership and versatility will be valuable assets for the team.
“Marley is a dynamic player who understands what it means to represent West Virginia,” Plitzuweit said. “Her ability to score, distribute, and defend makes her a perfect fit for our program. We can’t wait to see her in the Gold and Blue.”
With the transfer portal deadline approaching on April 22, WVU has made a significant move in solidifying its backcourt depth for the 2025-26 season. Fans can look forward to seeing Washenitz bring her competitive fire and homegrown talent back to Morgantown.
