Providence Friars’ Head Coach Kim English Faces Challenges Amid Roster Changes and Penalties
Providence College men’s basketball head coach Kim English is navigating a series of challenges as the team undergoes significant roster transitions and addresses recent disciplinary actions.
In his inaugural season with the Friars, English led the team to a 21-14 overall record and a 10-10 standing in the BIG EAST Conference. Notably, he became the first head coach in Providence history to secure 20 wins in his debut season. Under his guidance, junior Devin Carter earned the title of BIG EAST Player of the Year, and Josh Oduro received All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention.
However, the team is currently experiencing significant roster changes. Key players, including forward Bryce Hopkins, have entered the transfer portal, indicating potential shifts for the Friars.
Adding to the complexities, English was ejected early in the second half during a home game against Xavier on February 13, 2025. He directed postgame remarks toward both game referee Brent Hampton and the conference, leading to a $5,000 fine imposed by the BIG EAST for his on-court comments following the ejection.
Despite these hurdles, English remains focused on recruiting and team development. In May 2024, he announced the addition of several players, including senior Jabri Abdur-Rahim and junior Wesley Cardet Jr., to the 2024-25 roster.
As the Friars prepare for the upcoming season, English’s leadership will be pivotal in steering the team through these transitions and maintaining competitiveness within the BIG EAST
Conference.
