Auburn University Sued for Requiring Students to Attend Football Games or Face Expulsion
Auburn, AL – Auburn University is facing a lawsuit from a group of students who claim that the university’s policy of requiring students to attend football games or face expulsion is unconstitutional.
The plaintiffs, who wish to remain anonymous, claim that they were told by university administrators that they would be expelled if they did not attend at least 80% of the university’s home football games.
“We were shocked and outraged when we were told that we had to attend football games or face expulsion,” said one of the plaintiffs. “We believe that this policy is a clear violation of our rights as students and as citizens.”
The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court, alleges that the university’s policy violates the students’ rights to freedom of assembly and freedom of speech.
“Auburn University’s policy is a blatant attempt to coerce students into attending football games,” said the plaintiffs’ attorney. “We believe that this policy is unconstitutional and we will fight to have it overturned.”
Auburn University officials have declined to comment on the lawsuit, but a spokesperson for the university said that the policy is in place to promote school spirit and to support the university’s athletic programs.
The lawsuit is the latest controversy to hit Auburn University, which has been embroiled in several high-profile scandals in recent years.
The case is set to go to trial later this year.
