Derek Hough Donates $50 Million to Utah Valley University: “Gratitude for the Place That Helped Me Find My Rhythm”
Orem, UT — April 20, 2025
In an inspiring move blending generosity and personal legacy, Emmy-winning dancer and choreographer Derek Hough has announced a $50 million donation to Utah Valley University (UVU). The landmark contribution—one of the largest in the university’s history—will support the performing arts, dance education, student scholarships, and the construction of a new world-class arts center.
Hough, who attended UVU early in his career and credits the school with shaping his artistic discipline, made the announcement during a celebratory event at the campus’s Noorda Center for the Performing Arts. The moment was made even more special with the reveal of a new mural in Salt Lake City, commissioned to honor Hough’s contributions to the arts and education.
> “This is where I found my rhythm—not just on stage, but in life,” Hough said. “UVU believed in me before the world ever knew my name, and now it’s my turn to invest in the next generation of artists.”
UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez praised the gift as a transformative moment for the university’s arts and humanities programs.
> “Derek Hough has dazzled the world with his talent and heart,” Tuminez said. “This gift ensures that future performers and creators will have the resources they need to shine.”
The funds will establish the Derek Hough Center for Dance and Performance Excellence, featuring cutting-edge rehearsal studios, a black box theater, and digital production suites. It will also launch scholarship initiatives for students from underserved communities pursuing degrees in dance, theater, and music.
The accompanying mural—set to be installed in Salt Lake’s arts district—will highlight Hough’s evolution from a young Utah dancer to a global star, celebrating his impact on both entertainment and education.
> “Art changes lives,” Hough said. “And this place gave me the courage to believe in that truth. I hope this gift helps others discover their voice, their movement, their purpose.”
