OU Star Gymnast Faith Torrez Suspended Following NCAA Regional Victory
In a shocking development just hours after scoring a perfect 10 and helping lead the Oklahoma Sooners women’s gymnastics team to the NCAA regional final, sophomore standout Faith Torrez has been suspended indefinitely by the university.
OU Athletic Director Joe Castiglione confirmed the suspension in a brief statement late Monday night, citing “a violation of team and athletic department policies.” While the exact nature of the violation has not been officially disclosed, multiple sources close to the program told The Oklahoman that the suspension is believed to be related to an alleged altercation with a meet official following the competition.
According to those sources, Torrez was reportedly seen arguing with a judge over scoring discrepancies before leaving the competition floor. OU head coach K.J. Kindler declined to comment directly on the situation but expressed disappointment in the post-meet press conference.
“We hold all of our student-athletes to the highest standards of conduct,” Kindler said. “Faith is an incredible competitor, but we will handle this matter internally and in accordance with our values as a program.”
Torrez’s suspension puts her status for the upcoming NCAA regional final in serious doubt, dealing a major blow to the Sooners’ national title hopes.
This is a developing story.
