MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In a pivotal moment for West Virginia University, Michael T. Benson has been officially appointed as the institution’s 27th president. The WVU Board of Governors finalized the decision on February 20, 2025, with the announcement made public shortly thereafter on February 24.

 

Benson, who brings over 30 years of leadership experience in higher education, most recently served as president of Coastal Carolina University. He is widely recognized for his ability to drive innovation, foster community engagement, and strengthen academic excellence—qualities that WVU is seeking as it moves into a new chapter of growth and transformation.

 

His presidency will officially begin in July 2025, and he has expressed both humility and enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating he plans to “lead by example and with energy.” Faculty, students, and alumni alike are optimistic about what his leadership will bring to the Mountaineer community.
