Headline: Maryland Wrestling Mourns the Loss of Legendary Coach and Administrator Kevin Kearns
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The University of Maryland wrestling community is mourning the loss of Kevin Kearns, a beloved and influential figure whose dedication to the program spanned more than five decades. Kearns passed away on April 29, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to Maryland wrestling.
Kearns first joined the program as a student-athlete in 1966 and returned after serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In 1972, he began working with the wrestling program as an assistant coach and later as an administrator. His coaching career was marked by the development of multiple All-American athletes and countless contributions that helped elevate the Terrapins on the national stage.
Beyond the mat, Kearns was known for his selfless dedication and positive influence on generations of wrestlers. In 2020, the program honored his legacy by creating the “Kevin Kearns 11th Man Award,” given annually to individuals who embody the passion, loyalty, and work ethic that defined his life and career.
“Coach was simply an amazing man,” said Maryland head coach Alex Clemsen. “His loss is being felt by so many because of his enormous heart, his never-ending generosity, and his love for all those who were a part of Maryland Wrestling.”
Kearns is survived by his children, Lance and Courtney. His impact on the Maryland wrestling family and the broader wrestling community will never be forgotten.
