Dawn Staley Praises College Bands: “They Don’t Get the Credit They Deserve”
Columbia, SC – April 21, 2025
South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley is known for recognizing every element that contributes to her team’s success — and that includes the sounds coming from the stands.
In a recent interview, Staley expressed her deep appreciation for college bands, saying they’re an often-overlooked part of the game-day experience.
“College bands probably don’t get the credit they deserve,” Staley said. “They really are part of the atmosphere that’s created in the gym.”
Staley, who has led the Gamecocks to multiple Final Four appearances and two national championships, highlighted how the bands help fuel the energy inside arenas and create memorable environments for players and fans alike.
Her comments come at a time when discussions around the college sports experience are expanding beyond athletes and coaches to include fans, spirit squads, and yes — the bands.
“We feed off their energy,” Staley added. “They bring something unique every game, and that matters more than people realize.”
As South Carolina continues to be a powerhouse in women’s basketball, Staley’s words serve as a reminder that behind every great team is a community — and often, a brass section — bringing the heat.
