Dodgers Trade Gavin Lux to Reds in Roster Shake-Up
Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Dodgers, continuing to reshape their roster after another postseason run, traded homegrown infielder and two-time World Series champion Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. In exchange, the Dodgers received minor league outfielder Mike Sirota and a competitive-balance draft pick.
Lux, 27, was a first-round draft pick in 2016 and made his major league debut in 2019. He was instrumental in the Dodgers’ Game 5 World Series clincher, driving in the game-tying run. Once seen as the franchise’s shortstop of the future, Lux’s career trajectory shifted following significant injuries and positional adjustments.
After Corey Seager’s departure following the 2022 season, Lux was slated to take over at shortstop. However, a devastating injury in spring training 2023 — tearing both the ACL and LCL in his right knee — sidelined him for the year. Lux returned in 2024 but struggled in spring training and transitioned to second base, with Mookie Betts filling the shortstop role.
This past season, Lux batted .251 with 10 home runs, a .703 OPS, and 2.1 WAR. He also played a key role in the Dodgers’ postseason, starting 11 of their 16 games. Despite his contributions, the signing of Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim made Lux expendable as the Dodgers continue to refine their infield depth.
Mike Sirota, 21, is a promising outfield prospect with the Reds’ minor league system. Known for his speed and defensive skills, Sirota has shown potential as a future contributor at the major league level. The additional competitive-balance pick gives the Dodgers flexibility to further bolster their farm system.
For Lux, the trade offers a fresh start with the Reds, who continue building a young, dynamic roster. The Dodgers, meanwhile, remain focused on retooling as they aim for another World Series title.
