MLB Bans Yankees Fans for Interfering with Mookie Betts During World Series
Major League Baseball (MLB) has indefinitely banned two New York Yankees fans, Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen, from all MLB stadiums and events following an incident during Game 4 of the 2024 World Series. The fans interfered with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts as he attempted to catch a foul ball near the right-field stands at Yankee Stadium. One fan grabbed Betts’ glove, while the other seized his bare hand, posing a significant safety risk.
The incident occurred on October 29, 2024, when Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a foul ball to right field. Betts made a leaping catch at the wall, but Capobianco and Hansen reached over the fence, with one attempting to pull the ball from Betts’ glove and the other grabbing his non-glove hand. Both fans were immediately ejected from Yankee Stadium and had their tickets for Game 5 revoked.
MLB officials cited the fans’ actions as posing a serious risk to Betts’ health and safety, exceeding acceptable fan behavior. The ban includes all MLB stadiums, offices, and facilities, and the fans are prohibited from attending any MLB-sponsored events. If found at any MLB property or event, they will be removed and subject to arrest for trespassing.
The Yankees organization condemned the incident, emphasizing the importance of safety and security for players, fans, and staff. Betts expressed his displeasure with the fans’ conduct, highlighting the disturbance it caused during the game.
The Dodgers went on to win Game 5, clinching the World Series title. The upcoming 2025 MLB season is scheduled to commence on March 27.
