South Carolina Forward Ashlyn Watkins Remains with Gamecocks Despite Legal Troubles, Out for Season with Torn ACL
Columbia, SC — Ashlyn Watkins, the standout junior forward for the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team, remains with the program despite a tumultuous year marked by legal issues and a season-ending injury.
In August 2024, Watkins was arrested and charged with first-degree assault and battery and kidnapping following an incident at an on-campus housing facility. She was accused of physically assaulting another individual and forcibly moving them without consent. The victim managed to escape and alert authorities by pulling a fire alarm. Watkins was released on a $30,000 bond and faced an October court date. However, the charges were later dismissed, allowing Watkins to return to the team after serving a suspension for the season opener.
Just as Watkins was regaining her stride on the court, the Gamecocks were dealt another blow. In early January 2025, Watkins suffered a torn ACL in her left knee, sidelining her for the remainder of the 2024–25 season. The injury occurred during a routine play in practice, and subsequent tests confirmed the severity of the damage.
“It’s been a tough year for Ashlyn, but she’s a fighter,” said head coach Dawn Staley. “We’re supporting her through her recovery and look forward to having her back stronger than ever.”
Watkins had been a crucial part of the Gamecocks’ roster, known for her defensive prowess, rebounding skills, and athleticism. Her absence will be felt as South Carolina continues its pursuit of another deep postseason run.
Despite these challenges, Watkins remains an integral part of the team and is expected to make a full recovery. Fans and teammates alike are hopeful for her return in the 2025–26 season, where she will look to reclaim her spot as one of the Gamecocks’ key contributors.
