Derek Hough Announces Departure from Dancing with the Stars

Los Angeles, CA — In a surprising turn of events, Derek Hough has officially announced his departure from Dancing with the Stars, ending a remarkable era that spanned over a decade with the hit show. The six-time Mirrorball Trophy winner and beloved judge shared the news today through an emotional statement on social media, leaving fans and fellow cast members stunned.

“After many incredible seasons, unforgettable dances, and cherished memories, I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from Dancing with the Stars,” Hough wrote. “This show has been my second home, but it’s time for me to explore new creative opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”

Hough first joined the show in 2007 as a professional dancer, quickly becoming a fan favorite with his innovative choreography and dynamic performances. After winning six Mirrorball Trophies, he transitioned to the judges’ panel in 2020, bringing his expertise and charisma to the role.

Sources close to Hough suggest that his decision was influenced by upcoming projects, including a potential Broadway production and an expansion of his national dance tour with wife Hayley Erbert. Additionally, his growing involvement in choreography for film and television has opened new doors that require his full attention.

ABC released a statement shortly after Hough’s announcement: “Derek Hough has been an integral part of the Dancing with the Stars family. His talent, passion, and dedication have left an indelible mark on the show. While we’re sad to see him go, we’re excited to see what the future holds for him.”

Fellow judge Carrie Ann Inaba and longtime host Alfonso Ribeiro also shared heartfelt tributes, with Inaba noting, “Derek’s energy and artistry elevated our show in ways words can’t describe. He will be deeply missed on the panel, but his legacy will forever be part of DWTS.”

As for who will replace Hough on the judges’ panel, ABC has yet to make an official announcement, though rumors are swirling that former pros and past champions may be considered.

While fans are saddened by the news, Hough reassured them in his statement: “This isn’t goodbye forever. Dance is in my soul, and I’ll always be connected to this incredible family. Thank you for all the love and support over the years—I carry it with me into this next chapter.”

Hough’s final appearance on Dancing with the Stars will be during a special farewell episode in the upcoming season, celebrating his extraordinary contributions to the show that helped define a generation of dance on television.
