Alice in Chains Netflix Documentary Announced: “Down in a Hole” to Explore the Band’s Legacy
February 6, 2025 – Los Angeles, CA
Netflix has officially announced a new documentary chronicling the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of Alice in Chains. Titled Down in a Hole: The Alice in Chains Story, the film will explore the Seattle band’s journey from the grunge explosion of the early ‘90s to their modern-day resurgence.
The documentary, set to premiere in late 2025, will feature never-before-seen footage, intimate interviews with surviving band members Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney, and Mike Inez, as well as archival clips of late frontman Layne Staley and bassist Mike Starr.
A Deep Dive into Tragedy and Triumph
“Alice in Chains is one of the most influential bands to come out of the grunge era,” said executive producer David Fincher, known for his love of dark, introspective storytelling. “Their music was raw, emotional, and ahead of its time. We wanted to tell their story with the depth and honesty it deserves.”
The film will trace Alice in Chains’ meteoric rise, the struggles with addiction that led to Staley’s tragic passing in 2002, and how the band found new life with vocalist William DuVall. Fans will also hear from key figures in the Seattle music scene, including Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, and Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl.
Cantrell Speaks Out
In an exclusive interview for the documentary, Jerry Cantrell reflected on the band’s journey:
“Layne and Mike were a huge part of what made Alice in Chains special. We went through hell and back together, but the music has always been what held us together. This documentary is a tribute to them, to the fans, and to what we created.”
A Must-Watch for Grunge Fans
With Netflix’s recent success in music documentaries, including films on Nirvana, Metallica, and the Foo Fighters, Down in a Hole is expected to be a must-watch for rock fans. The streaming giant has promised a cinematic, emotionally charged experience that sheds new light on one of the most powerful bands of the past three decades.
The documentary will be available for streaming globally on Netflix in December 2025.
