Two Fatalities in Separate Falls on Glyder Fach and Tryfan
Two hikers tragically lost their lives in separate incidents on Glyder Fach and Tryfan, despite the efforts of rescuers and bystanders.
First Incident – Glyder Fach
On the afternoon of February 16, a couple was descending the main face of Glyder Fach after a day in the hills when one of them slipped on a patch of grass and fell approximately 10 meters. Her walking partner attempted to reach her but also fell, suffering a suspected fractured wrist and head injuries. Despite his injuries, he managed to call for help and began CPR.
Due to poor visibility, the Wales Air Ambulance was unable to reach the casualty. In response, two Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO) hill teams walked in, while a third group was airlifted by a Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter to a lower cloud base near Llyn Bochlwyd. Upon arrival, rescuers treated the injured walker and assisted him down the mountain. Tragically, the fallen hiker did not survive her injuries. Her body was stretchered down to below the cloud base, where she was airlifted to Oggie Base.
Second Incident – Tryfan
On February 22, a group was ascending the north ridge of Tryfan when one member fell approximately 20 meters into steep terrain. Passers-by with climbing equipment abseiled down and secured the casualty while an OVMRO team member, already nearby, reached the scene and initiated CPR.
Meanwhile, the Welsh Ambulance Service stood by at base as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter transported rescue team members onto the mountain. Despite their efforts, the hiker had succumbed to her injuries. She was later brought down to Oggie Base.
Rescue Efforts and Community Support
Both incidents highlight the risks of mountain terrain, even for experienced hikers. OVMRO, a volunteer-based rescue team operating 24/7, responded swiftly to both emergencies. Their efforts, alongside those of emergency services and members of the public, were commendable despite the tragic outcomes.
“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the casualties,” OVMRO stated. “We also extend our gratitude to those who assisted at the scene.”
These tragic events serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of hiking in unpredictable mountain conditions and the importance of preparation and safety precautions.
