Vale John Beckwith: Melbourne Demons Mourn the Loss of a Legend
It is with great sadness that the Melbourne Football Club announces the passing of John Beckwith, a celebrated figure in AFL history, who passed away this week at the age of 91.
The Club extends its deepest condolences to his family, former teammates, and many friends.
Beckwith was renowned for his exceptional skills as a defender, his leadership on the field, and his unwavering dedication to the sport. He was an integral part of the Melbourne team that secured five premierships in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, and 1960, and he captained the team to success in 1957 and 1959.
Beyond his playing career, Beckwith’s influence extended into coaching and mentorship. After retiring from playing, he seamlessly stepped into the role of Melbourne Football Club coach from 1968-1970, further cementing his legacy in the football community. His insight, experience, and passion for the game inspired many young players who looked up to him as both a coach and a role model.
To honor Beckwith, the Demons will wear black arm bands when they take on Fremantle on Sunday at TIO Traeger Park in Alice Springs.
