Reading FC Faces Transfer Embargo, No New Signings Until Takeover Completes
Reading FC manager Ruben Selles has confirmed that the English Football League (EFL) will not permit any new signings until the club’s takeover is finalized. The Royals, who have been under a transfer embargo for nearly five years, can only acquire free agents or loan players until at least January 2025.
As the League One season approaches with less than two weeks to go, Reading remains the only EFL team yet to make any signings. This has raised concerns about the squad’s depth ahead of the new campaign.
Following a 1-0 pre-season victory over Queens Park Rangers at the SCL Stadium on Saturday, Selles addressed questions about potential new arrivals. “Realistically, we are in a situation where we cannot get any players,” the Spanish manager explained. “Not only because of the transfer embargo but because the EFL says until the takeover is happening, we cannot get any players in until the budget is confirmed.”
Selles noted his expectations are low, similar to last season. “I just try to get the very best out of the players available and try to get some of the young players with us to see which ones are ready to play for us and develop with us.”
The emphasis on youth development is evident, with young players such as Abraham Kanu, Emmanuel Osho, and Andre Garcia making a strong impression during pre-season.
Reading’s preparations continue with upcoming matches against Cardiff City and Hull City, culminating in the opening fixture of the League One season against Birmingham City on August 10.
