All Blacks Announce 36-Man Squad for Rugby Championship
In a major announcement, the All Blacks have unveiled their 36-man squad for the upcoming Rugby Championship, featuring the return of high-profile players Will Jordan and Sam Cane. Both players have been sidelined due to injuries but are now fit and ready to contribute to the national team once again.
Jordan, who has been recovering from a shoulder injury, missed the entire Super Rugby season for the Crusaders. Meanwhile, Cane has been dealing with a persistent back issue that disrupted his season in Japan. Their inclusion in the squad brings a significant boost in experience and talent. Jordan, the top try scorer at last year’s World Cup, will add a dynamic edge to the All Blacks’ backline, while Cane, a 95-Test veteran, will strengthen the loose forward contingent.
Joining them are uncapped Hurricanes back Ruben Love and experienced utility back David Havili. Love, who can play both fullback and first-five, has been a consistent performer for the Hurricanes and represented the Māori All Blacks and All Blacks XV in 2022. Havili’s versatility and experience will be valuable assets to the squad.
In a surprising move, Blues halfback Finlay Christie has been omitted from the squad. Newcomers Cortez Ratima and Noah Hotham have been preferred, showcasing the All Blacks’ commitment to rewarding recent performances. Christie’s absence is notable as there was no mention of an injury in the media release from New Zealand Rugby.
Veteran TJ Perenara, recovering from a knee injury sustained against England, has also been included, indicating the All Blacks’ faith in his recovery and contribution to the team. The selection underscores the All Blacks’ depth and the ongoing changing of the guard, with Cam Roigard expected to join once he recovers from his own knee issue later this year.
The squad also sees the rise of Sam Darry, whose impressive performances have earned him a place, especially in light of skipper Scott Barrett’s finger injury. Barrett’s return date remains uncertain, with his availability for the upcoming Tests against Argentina in doubt.
Head coach Scott Robertson commented on the squad selection: “It was a tough squad to select because everyone has owned their opportunities. Continuity is important, but it’s also important to reward performance. Sam Cane, Will, and David bring a lot of experience and leadership to the group, and Ruben, Noah, and Sam Darry have taken their chance in the environment.”
Josh Lord will train with the squad as lock cover, ensuring the team remains well-prepared for any eventuality.
With seven loose forwards now in the squad, including Cane and Jordan, Robertson’s strategy for the first Test against the Pumas will be closely watched. This will also mark Cane’s final year with the All Blacks before he transitions to Japan’s Suntory club.
The Rugby Championship kicks off with the All Blacks set to face Argentina on August 10 in Wellington, followed by a clash at Eden Park a week later. The squad’s blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents sets the stage for an exciting series as the All Blacks aim to continue their legacy of dominance in international rugby.
