New England Revolution Coach Caleb Porter Fined and Suspended for Post-Match Remarks
September 10, 2024 – Major League Soccer (MLS) announced on Tuesday that New England Revolution head coach Caleb Porter has been fined $20,000 and suspended for one match following his controversial comments on officiating after the team’s 1-0 loss to St. Louis CITY SC on September 7.
Porter’s heated remarks, captured during a postgame press conference and reported by The Blazing Musket, included calling one of the match officials a “coward” and describing the officiating as a “clown show.” The head coach expressed his frustration with what he believed was a missed handball by St. Louis, which he argued should have led to a penalty kick for New England.
In a statement, MLS cited Porter’s violation of the league’s Code of Conduct as the reason for the sanctions. Porter’s one-match suspension will be served during New England’s upcoming game.
The penalty underscores the league’s firm stance on maintaining respect toward officials and upholding professionalism in public comments.
Porter and the Revolution have yet to release an official response.
