South Carolina Gamecocks to Debut 1980 Throwback Uniforms Against Akron
This Saturday, the South Carolina Gamecocks will take the field in throwback uniforms inspired by their 1980 season, when George Rogers won the Heisman Trophy. The Gamecocks will wear the retro jerseys as they host the Akron Zips in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPNU.
The throwback uniforms pay homage to the iconic 1980 season, a milestone in South Carolina football history. Head coach Shane Beamer, who collaborated with Under Armour and the team’s equipment manager Larry Waters, helped bring the uniforms to life. The design closely mirrors the attire worn by Rogers and his teammates during that historic year.
“These uniforms honor a special time in Gamecock Football,” said Beamer. “Our players are excited, and it’s great to be able to honor that era.”
George Rogers, who regularly attends South Carolina home games, is excited to see the team don the uniforms from his playing days but believes it’s the players, not the uniforms, that will make the difference.
“I know the uniform isn’t what’s going to make them win. It’s the people in the uniforms that make them win,” said Rogers. “I think Coach Beamer is doing a lot of good things that help the team win, so let’s do it baby! Let’s get it on!”
Fans who can’t watch the game on ESPNU can look forward to highlights and coverage of the throwbacks on Sunday morning. With over four decades since that Heisman-winning season, the Gamecocks’ tribute to 1980 adds a nostalgic flair to this weekend’s matchup.
